ETON v HARROW, LORD'S, CIRCA 1889 - GREETING CARD & ENVELOPE
Eton v Harrow, Lord's, circa 1889
Albert Ludovici Jnr (1852-1932)
Oil on canvas
The Eton v Harrow fixture has been played at Lord’s for over 200 years. It first took place at Thomas Lord’s original ground in Dorset Square in August 1805, a few months before the Battle of Trafalgar, with Lord Byron appearing for Harrow. By the late 19th century the annual match at Lord’s between the two rival schools had become a major part of the English social scene. Gentlemen and ladies of the highest rank would come to see the cricket, and to be seen in all their finery.
